This two-volume publication examines the early work of photographer Robert Adams (born 1937) in relation to the German architect Rudolf Schwarz (1897-1961). In a previously unpublished text, Adams reveals a close connection between his photography and the European architect. In the 1960s, on his only European tour, Adams focused specifically on Rudolf Schwarz's churches in Aachen and Cologne, which left a lasting mark on Adams and inspired his decision to become a photographer and his early choice of subject, the Denver suburbs. As Adams wrote, Schwarz's buildings "helped suggest to me, when I returned to America, that not just churches, but whole urban and suburban landscapes might be revealed as sacred if we brought to them a measure of the same passionate regard that Schwarz had brought to his specifically religious commissions."

Recently, graphs have been studied and applied in various math and science fileds. In this monograph, we consider graphs with fractal property. Starting with graphs (combinatorial objects), we construct the corresponding groupoids (algebraic objects). The fractal property of graphs and groupoids is detected by the automata labelings (automata-theoretic objects). The groupoids with fractal property will be called graph fractaloids. By defining suitable representations of groupoids, we establish von Neumann algebras (operator-algebraic objects). As elements of the von Neumann algebras, we define the labeling operators (operator-theoretic objects) of graph fractaloids. In Part 1, by computing the free moments (free-probabilistic data) of the operators, we verify how the graph fractaloids act in the von Neumann algebras. Also, based on such computations, we can classify the graph fractaloids, in Part 2. Our classification shows the richness of graph fractaloids which are not fractal groups, in general. In Part 3, we show that, for any finite graph, there always exists a finite fractal graph containing it as its part.

The Kolonie was a fairly unimportant world at the fringes of the known universe. Although its climate and living conditions make it a habitable environment, the immense distance to the central worlds left it provincial and there were no serious plans for any form of colonization.

 

When the first oilfields were discovered, an enormous rush to the Kolonie started immediately. At that time space travel, and any other form of transportation was still completely dependent upon oil. Millions of colonists left their worlds to find their fortunes on the Kolonie. A new class of spaceships was constructed to ferry settlers and supplies to the distant world and bring back oil and oil products in vast quantities.

 

Kapitol, the main city on the Kolonie grew into a huge metropole and for more than a decade its spaceport was one of the busiest of the entire universe. When oil was finally replaced by other more efficient energy sources, importing it from the Kolonie to the main planet ceased to be profitable.

 

The large oil corporations pulled out and shipping to the Kolonie stopped entirely within a short amount of time.

Occasionally a government ship from the central world lands on the Kolonie to bring new government troops and officials, spare parts and new technology and sometimes a few passengers.

 

Leaving the Kolonie is difficult and very costly and far too many people are stranded and long to go back to their less remote home planets.

But there are still a few adventurers and fortune seekers who manage to travel to the Kolonie, which still offers many opportunities.
